The Evolution of my Geekdom – Part 2

Things were going great in my D&D group. Other than the DM, there were 4 of us who played regularly, plus another 2 that came in and played when their schedules allowed. Then, all of the sudden, one of the regular guys went crazy on me. I mean that too. He went crazy and decided to take it out on me.

We were at a part of the campaign where our characters went into a town for information that a woman had. As a group, we decided it would be best for my character to seduce the woman to try to get the information from her since my thief had the highest charisma score. After some dice were rolled, it was determined that I had succeeded in my seduction attempt and my character took the woman to the D&D equivalent of a pay-by-the-hour hotel to “pump her for information”. The DM asked the other players what their characters were doing. Since it was a new town, everyone said they were going to visit the local shops to see if there was any new equipment for them to buy…except for one guy.
He told the DM that he was going to stay at the hotel where I was. The other players (they would tell me the next day) assumed like I did, that he was just there for backup (in our story, bad guys were after us). Instead, he went to my room, kicked in the door, and started attacking my character. As my character was in the middle of taking care of business, he had no clothes on, and no weapon (Well, no weapon that the DM would acknowledge, anyways. HAHA! A penis joke. Hmmmm. I feel dirty now). I looked over at the player attacking my character to shoot him a “WTF” look, but he wouldn’t even look at me. So, I had my character try to run away, but because I had no armor or weapons, it was easy for my attacker to kill me.

All of the other players were looking at this guy trying to figure out what the hell just happened. I had done nothing, in-game or out of game, to deserve what he had just done to me. He avoided their gazes too. He just stared at his character sheet. Not knowing what else to do, I started working on my backup character. I always had one made up, I just had to adjust it for the current group’s level. The rest of the players took that time to have their characters hunt down the guy who killed my character and killed him in revenge. Their characters then took my thief’s body to a priest to have him resurrected.

After that, the DM called for a break. I went outside to smoke, followed by the guy who attacked me and another player. We both asked him why he did what he did, but he swears he didn’t remember doing it (A few years later I learned that he suffered from extreme depression and was an alcoholic). We went back inside after the break and finished the session, but it was never the same after that. Nobody knew how to act around this guy anymore. Our playing time slowly started dwindling until it was almost non-existent.

Then, I moved to Detroit….

Wow. Can’t wait to read about what happens next in the D.

I assume I know the person who did this?

It’s probably good you moved. That was not cool of him, not cool at all.

“Then I moved to Detroit…” Is the sign of many a great narrative. Alright, maybe not many, but just this one. 😉

I remember pretty clearly the last game I tried to DM… It was full of the same people who had always played together, I had good story lines, and good ideas, and everyone seemed up for it. But, somehow the magic was gone… I wonder now if I could ever get back into it? I wonder if it is something I could share with my son when the time is right? Or, have I switched completely from DM’ing to taking those stories and turning them into blog posts, novels, and half finished ideas scrawled in my notebooks…?

    • That’s what has happened to all of my ideas. They’re either here, on Stuph Blog, or sitting in a notebook somewhere scattered around my house. There’s a guy at work who’s trying to get me to play D&D again, but I’m not sure about it. It’s not that I don’t want to play, I just don’t have the time and I can’t afford to buy the books again.

  6. […] in August, I was going through some of my old posts when I came across this one, about my old D&D gaming group. I hadn’t talked to any of them for eight to ten years. I […]
