I’m A Little Confused

Instead of a new episode of Agents of SHIELD this past week, they showed a special called Marvel Studios: Assembling a Universe. In it, they chronicle all of the Avengers movies/shows, starting with Iron Man. They ended the show with previews of the upcoming movies: Captain America 2 (which releases in a couple of weeks) and the second Avengers (which I think releases next summer).

Now, when they talked about some of what happens in the new Cap, I understood it. It all made sense: both as a continuation of the Avengers storyline, plus as just a Captain America story. The part I’m confused about has to do with what they said to expect with The Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Specifically, it was the characters they said were going to be in the new movie. The new film will include everyone from the first one, plus a couple of new faces: Quicksilver and the Scarlett Witch. I’m confused as to how they’re going to use those two characters.

Here’s why: In order to have them in the movie, they’re going to have to completely change their back stories. They’re not allowed to have them be the same as in the comic.

When Fox bought the film rights to the X-Men, that also included everything mutant. That means that only Fox is allowed to make movies that contain Marvel’s mutants. Quicksilver and the Scarlett Witch are both mutants.

A guy at work says that there’s a loophole that Marvel Studios is exploiting. As long as they don’t actually come out and say that they’re mutants, they’re allowed to use the characters. So, either they’re just going to completely ignore where their powers come from, or they’re going to have to come up with a new explanation for how they got their powers.

Another thing they are either going to have to ignore or come up with a new explanation for is their family. Quicksilver and the Scarlett Witch are brother and sister. That can stay the same. They are also the children of Magneto. That cannot stay the same. There is absolutely no loophole for them to exploit to include him in the movie.

In the comics, their father had brainwashed them and forced them into joining his Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. They eventually regain their senses and joined The Avengers to atone for their past misdeeds. Who exactly could they say is their father in the movie? The only one who even comes close to Magneto’s level of villainy in The Avengers movies is Loki. Considering Loki has been in 3 movies so far, it’d be hard to give him children now and not have a pretty good reason for not mentioning them already.

Some of you might read this and think I have something against Quicksilver and the Scarlett Witch. It’s nothing like that. I think they’re both interesting characters and I have no problem with them being in a movie. I just think it’d be better if it was an X-Men movie.

Over the years, just about every Marvel hero has been a member of The Avengers. Why couldn’t they write in any of those characters into the new movie? Why did it have to be those two? Why not use the Black Panther or Ant-Man? How about Wasp or Luke Cage? Black Knight? Namor?

My point is: they could’ve used any of those other characters and not have to change anything about them. Why did they have to pick the two that they have to change everything about just to include them? I don’t get it.

Who knows why Hollywood does what it does? Someone probably sold a “great” idea. We’ll see when the film comes out.

Well, in the first Avengers, there was very little backstory for the characters that didn’t have their own movies – Black Widow, Archery guy. Maybe they’ll do the same this time too.

Maybe they got permission in exchange for something else? Either way, since they already have too many “main” characters in the movie (that everyone likes watching), the siblings probably won’t be getting much screen time anyways.

  4. I’m inclined to agree with Jaded on this. Hollywood is clearly thinking it can throw its weight around again…

Marvel needs to find a way to get those rights back from Fox. I never paid attention to the fact that Fox was doing the X-Men movies.

    • According to the comic book nerds at work (who look into these things way more than I do), there’s only two ways that would happen and neither seems likely. One, Marvel buys it back from them, which Fox would ask for a tremendous amount of money for. Or two, the rights would automatically go back to Marvel if Fox goes longer than 5 years without having a new X-Men movie in some phase of production.

Like I said, neither seems likely…

Perhaps Marvel and Fox struck a deal? They get to use these two mutants, and there will be some cameos from Avengers in the next X-Men movie? I can’t imagine Marvel changing the backstory of these characters as much as they’d have to otherwise. They wouldn’t want the fan backlash.
