It’s time for the sixth installment here on Versus. On this episode, I’m going to be doing it a little bit differently. Instead of 2 one-on-one fights, I’m going to be doing one three-way matchup.
One of the reasons that it’s taken me this long to post this matchup is because I’ve been debating this with the other two guys at work for the last week. The other reason is that I’ve been playing a lot of Final Fantasy 7 (I need to find some way to work Cloud and/or Sephiroth into a matchup. Does anyone have any ideas for who they could face off against?).
Normally, when we do one of these at work, it’s a “whoever you think will win” scenario. This time, my team lead made the rule that we each had to pick a different answer. It was then decided that the order in which we got to choose would be based upon how long each of us had been with the company. That meant my team lead went first, the other guy second, and I went last.
Here’s the matchup:
ROUND 1: BEST CALIFORNIA CRIME FIGHTING DUO – TEAM 1: ROGER MURTAUGH AND MARTIN RIGGS (DANNY GLOVER AND MEL GIBSON, LETHAL WEAPON SERIES) VS. TEAM 2: AXL FOLEY AND BILLY ROSEWOOD (EDDIE MURPHY AND JUDGE REINHOLD, BEVERLY HILLS COP SERIES) VS. TEAM 3: JOE GAVILAN AND K.C. CALDEN (HARRISON FORD AND JOSH HARTNETT, HOLLYWOOD HOMICIDE)
Now, I will admit that, if taking all of their films into account, my Team 3 loses to both of the other two. In that case, I would have to give Team 1 the victory here. Riggs and Murtaugh took down Jet Li even after they were too old for that shit.
But, my argument was (and this is why it has taken a week’s worth of arguing over) that if it was based on just the first movie alone, I think my guys on Team 3 win this one. Let’s take a look at all 3 of the first movies.
Team 1: Riggs and Murtaugh go up against Vietnam veterans (something that they both are themselves, so they’re comfortable with that world) who were in the Special Forces (which Riggs was in also). These bad guys were running a heroin distribution empire (At the beginning of the movie, Riggs was in the drug catching department of the police force, so it’s also an area he has experience with).
Team 2: I have to start this one out with the explanation of why it’s Foley and Rosewood. The other guy said that he chose Rosewood over Taggert because Rosewood was the only one, other than Foley himself, who was in all 3 Beverly Hills Cop movies. To me, that makes it that much easier to pick Taggert over Rosewood. Then, you wouldn’t have to include the third movie, which was nowhere near as good as the first two. Plus, Taggert was a much better cop than Rosewood.
Anyways, Foley goes to Beverly Hills to catch the drug dealer who killed his friend. Along the way he picks up Rosewood. Now, even with Taggert, this team loses in this one. Foley does all of the work in this movie. All the other two do is make the “banana in the tailpipe” gag work.
Team 3: Both Gavilan and Calden are good detectives already. They also both have careers other that police work. They get called into a case involving the rap recording business, something they are both outsiders in. The bad guy is a record producer who employs a crooked ex-cop. So, not only do they have to solve the crime in a world that they don’t know, they have to do it while balancing their other jobs as well. On top of that, they have a bent Internal Affairs officer breathing down their necks and trying to have them arrested the whole time.
So, if you think about it, my team had the most to overcome in order to catch the crooks, and they still did it. They defeated the bad guy, his henchman, and the bent IA officer all while Gavilan sold a seven million dollar home and Calden avenged his father’s death.
That’s not to say that the others didn’t have tough roads. I just think mine had a tougher one. To me, that means that would make them the best California crime fighting duo.
Please, let me know what you think in the comment section. Also, be sure to send me any matchup ideas you have (whether if it’s for Cloud or Sephiroth, or any other characters you can think of) via the form below.
